1 pixel back insures there isn't a white line at the intersection. That sometimes happens if you don't do it. But you can't see it until you zoom in, after the fact.

Not sure I understand the purpose of moving back one pixel. It would seem that if you started your bounding box at a certain point and you plan to move it back further by one pixel, that you should have then instead started one pixel further so that you don't have to do the one px adjustment in the first place. No?

You can choose a dozen ways to do a thing in Photoshop. It almost becomes a personal choice, it's quick and it works great for us an other studio photographers who use solid seamless backdrops,as you can see by the example. If you don't need the "size" the simplest solution would be to Crop the extraneous areas off, as suggested by another poster, earlier.

solid color, sure, but in your example there are shades etc... If it's a solid color, why not just extract the object from the solid color?
